World Health Organization Issues Alert Over Acute Scarcity of Obesity Medications

Under a tenth of people that would benefit from GLP-1 drugs such as Wegovy have access to them, caution the global health agency as it publishes its inaugural guidance on the therapies.

Considering more than one billion people worldwide now obese, it is calling for more widespread and fairer availability to this class of drugs.

Based on estimates, more than two billion will be obese by 2030 without intervention.

"The new guidance acknowledges that obesity is a long-term condition that can be managed with comprehensive and continuous treatment," remarked its chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Significant expense, insufficient output, and logistical bottlenecks are key barriers to broad access to the treatments that can help people shift considerable weight, explains the agency.

Weight-Loss Drug Shortage

Even in the present best projected case, the manufacturing of GLP-1 therapies would only suffice for around 100 million people – less than 10% of those who need them, as stated by the WHO.

The recommendation calls on countries and companies to increase availability, via measures including licensing agreements.

Exclusive production rights on a key compound – the primary component of Novo Nordisk's Wegovy – is set to lapse in several nations in 2026.

The Way Weight-Loss Drugs Operate

These medications mimick a biological compound to reduce digestion speed, curb appetite and enhance feelings of fullness so individuals consume fewer calories.

People usually see weight reduction in the initial weeks of commencing the once-weekly jabs.

Studies suggests users may put most of the weight back on within a year of halting the drug, when their normal appetite resume.

To be above a healthy weight raises your likelihood for contracting health problems, like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, brain attack, and certain cancers.

Obesity impacts individuals in countries worldwide and was responsible for over three and a half million deaths worldwide in 2024, as per the health agency.
