AI-generated pictures purporting to show Nicolás Maduro detained following his apprehension by the United States have gained countless of views online.
Initial fake AI image apparently showing him being escorted off a aircraft emerged a brief time later. This image was unpublished by any authoritative government accounts; it was instead published on X by an profile describing itself as an “AI video art enthusiast”.
Our analysis used Google’s SynthID, determining the image was generated or edited with generative AI.
Additional synthetic images started circulating in the subsequent period, appearing to show more angles of Maduro detained. Noticeable identifying marks on the graphics reveal they came from an Instagram profile called ultravfx.
The detection tool confirms all of these pictures were likewise produced using Google AI.
