The UK government has included an additional eleven further destinations to its travel alert list concerning the risks of toxic alcohol contamination from contaminated spirits.
The expanded warning features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following reports of "an international surge in the frequency of documented incidents" of toxic alcohol toxicity.
Only last month, authorities had previously placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current roster, following several high-profile incidents such as the fatal demise of half a dozen travelers in Laos in 2024.
Tourists are being cautions that even tiny quantities of industrial alcohol can lead to permanent eye damage or fatality within 12 to 48 hrs.
Methanol is a harmful industrial alcohol often utilized in coolant, car cleaning liquid, and thinner. It is not designed for ingestion.
While it is generated during the manufacture of beverages, commercial firms reduce it to non-dangerous concentrations for drinking through the purification method.
However in some countries, it is clandestinely blended into spirits to reduce expenses, and as it is flavorless and odourless, it is very difficult to notice.
Government representative a senior official emphasized that all travellers should know the indicators of methanol contamination.
"When you are having drinks abroad, choose reputable establishments and avoid unlicensed drinks or complimentary drinks," the minister warned.
"If something seems unusual, like a fatigue that's far more intense than normal or sight issues – contact a doctor right away."
The complete register of nations identified as carrying a threat of methanol poisoning presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
