In a notable move ahead of next year's general election, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties.
"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.
The late summer revolt was triggered by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding allegations of systemic graft in politics.
According to the formal pact, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with a number of leading political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.
Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
